ODAM Kindle Cover

Building from Reader Response perspectives, the ODAM examines chat postings as actively interpreted "wreaderly" communication. It offers interlocking research tools for analyzing online talk practices, revealing tightly regulated, creative, and community-focused discourse.

Case Study Flow from 1 to 7

Research Questions

  1. Is meaning communicated in chatrooms?
  2. How is turn-taking negotiated within chatrooms?
  3. Are issues of cultural sensitivity as relevant as in face-to-face talk?
  4. How is electronic chat reflective of current social discourses?
  5. Will chat become a universally understood language?

Assumptions

  1. People create a different textual self for the chatroom environment.
  2. Conversation within chatrooms will change how we come to know others.
  3. Chat does not differ significantly from natural conversation.
  4. Observational studies of chatroom conversation can capture adaptations of conversational behaviors.
  5. Chatrooms are an important area for creating new conversational research theory.
