Abstract
The aim of this literature review is to critique contributions to discourse analysis and electronic communication, developing a study of how meaning exchange is functionally motivated in electronic 'talk'. This review establishes the theoretical framework and methodological focus for an original contribution to dialogue on electronic talk as a social meaning-making system within cyberculture. It also aims to create a semiotic model for 'Natural Language' in chatrooms.
Online research differs from face-to-face research, raising questions about the "reality" of cyberspace and whether chatroom exchanges are public or private. Data is collected from a specific chatroom, with participants aware of observation (ethics approval: University of South Australia).
Research Questions:
- How is turn-taking negotiated in chatrooms?
- With identifying cues (gender, nationality, age) absent, are issues like sexism as prevalent as in face-to-face talk?
- How does electronic chat reflect current social discourse?
- Is meaning constructible within chatrooms?
