Christmas  1999 Christies Beach  with Leigh

The last few months of 1999 were normal. Leigh was at home at Christmas time and Sacha was in Queensland or New South Wales. Leigh’s current girl friend of the time was from Malaysia or one of those places in that area. He had met her on the subway soon before going to Africa with the Australian baseball squad and had ‘hooked up’ with her on his return. She spent Christmas at our house and I took the train into Adelaide then walked to my office at the Magill Campus, an hour’s walk plus an hour on the train, only to discover that the campus was locked down for the day. I trudged back to the city then home. I am not sure why I was not with Chris/Kris for the day – we were probably feuding.

As liAS LIfe would have it I am wearing this hat and this Australian  Baseball shirt as I write this (April 17 2009) here in Jersey City.

We were back together for New Year’s Eve.  Y2K problem, the millennium bug, government conspiracies?

Every conspiracy site on the web was going nuts about doomsday and how America was being prepared to be taken over by some group or the other. The predictions came fast and furious. I use to show several of the leading conspiracy sites to my university classes to demonstrate the stupidly of the paranoid people who learnt how to make webpages and froth at the mouth with their craziness. It is what I love about the Internet, six-billion experts all proclaiming that their insights are the right ones.

Kris/Chris and I watched the New Year unfurl across the world. Firstly in New Zealand, then Australia, and past various islands – we had too much to drink to stay awake when the next day would begin in the States. When we awoke New Year’s afternoon various countries were still celebrating. New York’s midnight was about our noon and low and behold all the conspiracy theorists like all the religious doomsday prophets that have been predicating the End-Times for centuries were proven, once again, how wrong they were. It is amazing how people do not stop though and year after year of being wrong people are still making crazy and wrongful predictions. It is a fact that at some time the Sun will enlarge and swallow a few planets, including earth, and then collapse. There will be a time when there is no longer a Milky Way or even a universe. But how will that affect us? I am hoping to make it to the end of this paragraph, why try to deal with more?

Nothing happened. I do not recall even one traffic light anywhere in the world not working after midnight. All those who believe things are controlled by some group of individuals are idiots.

There was a court-issued maintenance circus with ‘what’s-her-face’. I know this because in the few notes I could find on the grand year 2000 there exists (gee now there is something for prosperity) an astrological chart file in my Astrolog 5.40 program sitting in a dusty archived corner of a CD at the bottom of a box that has this exciting information:

Westfield School 1998 Sports Award

Ah the memories – returning like an out-of-control truck down a mountain road – like the image I have of my life – the last court hurrah.

In August 2000, the World junior AAA baseball championships will be held in Edmonton Canada. http://www.edmontonbaseball.com/

Australia is one of the 12-nations participating.

One player from South Australia has been selected to the Australian AAA National squad to tour Canada and play in the World Series.  The rest of the 20-member squad are from the other states.

The South Australian player, Leigh Neuage, 16-years-old, year-12 Wirreanda High School has been selected to six-National baseball teams since 1997, which is an Australian record for his age. He has played in Under-16 World Series in the States in 1998 and toured South Africa in 1999, as well as participated in many other National tournaments.  He has been selected to his position (pitcher) on two national All-Star squads (1999, 2000).  He has been on seven South Australian State squads.  As well Leigh has received many awards including as a top ten finalist in the Messenger Sports Award in 1998. Leigh has been a full scholarship holder at the South Australian Institute of Sports for the past four years. (He was the youngest to ever get a full baseball scholarship).

McDonalds is a major sponsor of the AAA World Series (see enclosed pages).  As Leigh Neuage is the only South Australian person on the National squad I am inquiring if McDonalds in South Australia would sponsor Leigh.  If so I will say McDonalds is a sponsor of Leigh on our website for these tours.
http://se.unisa.edu.au/ws/home.htm
Also, Leigh is having a fundraising dinner on Saturday 24 June at the Southern Districts Baseball Club at 7 PM and Leigh would acknowledge sponsors then.

I realize this is short notice as he leaves July first, but we have just received confirmation of these tours. Besides being selected to the AAA National squad he has been selected to the Schoolboy National squad which will play tournaments in Ft. Lauderdale Florida, July 1 -13.  After these tournaments Leigh will join the AAA squad in Toronto for a series of tournaments across Canada prior to the World Series in Edmonton.

As can be expected these costs are difficult for Leigh and I to meet and any sponsorship is very helpful.

This is a footnote in the book I suppose it was court issued in the sense that I put in a court order for more money per week to raise the weekly amounts I needed for my rapidly money devouring baseball loving son and the court issued her a summons to pay the more money.

This is a footnote in the book For a good laugh and the extent humans go to blaming everything imaginable to being controlled by outside forces do a bit of a study then have a wank over the Bilderberg Group, Council on Foreign Relations, Eurabia, Freemasonry (which I followed and studied in the Holy Order of Mans), and my favourite, the Illuminati. There are thousands, probably millions subsets to these as well as every religion ever pasted together. I think conspiracy theories are like belief systems in that when what we believe in turns to shit then we say it is one of these groups behind it all. For example, just because Denver International Airport has weird art and ‘secret society’ images does not prove that it is the centre of the new world order – we all know Clifton Park, New York is – why? Because that is where I am from. In other words whatever we put meaning to is pregnant with meaning. Google has 394,000 pages by all the experts out there telling us about how the Masons signal spaceships to the Denver International Airport and why we should be freaked. Of course that is the total number of people – one per webpage – who have ever heard of the airport’s conspiracy nature. We are born, we live, we die – some have good genes some don’t. Some of us are born in poor places and conditions and some aren’t – that is it – nothing more or less. It is the same with animals. A dog could be born in a great home and have lots of attention and love or it could be infested with disease and live in a crap environment and die of hunger. Everything is where it is because of chance. If dogs and cats could make webpages they would tell us their conspiracy theories and religious beliefs. What people don’t mention when they talk about control is that every human in every group has either died within a certain parameter or they will die. No one has managed to progress their life past some hundred years – well my father has – but not many do. My favorite example is President Reagan. He was supposed to be some great ‘inside’ up there type of person but look at the end of his life – just a drooling incontinent blabbering idiot that did not know who anyone was. We all have the same fate and all these agencies that are supposed to be controlling existence on this planet have never – in thousands, probably millions of years, been able to change the fact that we are little more than a sack of genes.

If there was ever a year that seemed normal, then 2000 was it. It was so normal that I have little recollection of it. Saying that it was the first year after the 1990s and we had survived into the next millennium. The year 2000 was a fresh start year as well as an ending year. Preparation was beginning for the next great cycle in our lives.
Sacha moved out into an apartment several blocks away because his mother promised that she would pay the rent and what eighteen-year would not want that? After a few weeks she stopped paying. Our child maintenance agreement was based on the children living with me and still in school. Sacha was attending Christie Beach High. I took one course with him in the evening learning computer animation. My favorite image of that period was when I saw Sacha a block from “our” home with a bag of groceries and I complimented him on fending for himself and getting his own food. He had taken a bag of groceries from home and I realized then and there I was the local store – free at that. Leigh continued to get awards and be on state and national baseball teams.

Leigh continued with his baseball. There were the nationals in January 2000 at which someone from the Atlanta braves offered $60,000 for Leigh which in baseball terms was an insult. With that he would have been given an all-expense paid scholarship to any university he wanted at any time he no longer played professional baseball. For some reason both Leigh and I felt a bit hurt by the offer. Though he was only sixteen we were hearing of players getting a million dollars and Leigh was being told he was the best in Australia. We only knew of two Australians who got large sums.

One got $800,000 and went nuts after one year of playing in the minors in the States. Apparently, he snapped during a baseball game and stood on the pitcher’s mound talking to himself then ran around screaming and they had to put him in hospital and he never played again.

Another highly paid player quit midseason because he missed Australia. He left during a game and flew back to Queensland. There were a couple of bad stories, and we were told that baseball clubs were reluctant to pay out large sums to Australians. We could not understand the logic – just because some other no hopers could not make it in the States after receiving large sums of money did not mean that would happen to Leigh. He had worked very hard for a long time, did not use any drugs, or drink or do anything except practice baseball so there was no way that he would have a chance to fulfil his dream then blow it.

Leigh was selected for the National Schoolboy Team and the Australian National Team. In January the Nationals he was selected for the Australian U-18 team and in May (7th to 12 at Anderson Reserve, North Glenelg) he was selected for the Schoolboy U-18s to play in Florida two weeks before the U-18s World Series in Canada. Leigh had been named the most outstanding pitcher (Golden Arm Award) for the year before for nationals and not having the book for 2000 anymore I cannot recall what his awards were. I know he got some best thingy something and some parent rang me saying his son had done better than Leigh and that it was unfair Leigh would always be selected.

Parenting is such an ego thing. One part of us wants our children as well as the ones around them to do well; another part of us wants our child to beat the crap out of everyone else so we can shine in their aura. When our child wins then we can be oh so humble with lines like, ‘he just plays to play the game not to win’ and other total bullshit lines like that. When our child is overshadowed by someone else we wet ourselves trying to rationalize why the other kid (who of course we know is an ass to begin with) is getting more attention. Of course, I have never been much of a social person, and I did not like any of the other parents to begin with. I was just in Australia because the courts would not let me take my children back to the States. I saw everyone in Australia as an ass and those with children were just assess with ass-children. They were losers by location (Australia) and there was not much they could do about it. To complain to me was useless. What was I supposed to do? Tell them that their stupid little ass-child was better than my elite sports son? I don’t think so.

This is a footnote in the book - I am in Brooklyn overlooking not much at all in my new apartment (been here two weeks) trying to recall what happened in 2000. I have diaries and letters for most every year of my life except for 2000. There is a box of about one hundred CDs but nothing goes past mid-2001. Old websites have been replaced so many times I cannot find any that goes back to 2000 though I made hundreds of them. I found a few astrology charts and from them I try to recall what I had believed was reality just six years ago. Blogging would have been so much easier than lost CDs and Internet sites and notebooks. But is blogging truth or just what our online persona wants someone else to believe? In the worlds of the often reinvented self – we see this with the criminal who, after being caught and sent to the gallows or prison for life realise, at the end of their rope, literally/emotionally/psychically/physically that they are cactus and, usually (seventy-eight percent of the time according my research if I had done it), in the hopes of being believed by a human element before the inevitable death follows their shit lives become converted to Christianity. Their new self-invented character will witness the divine powers of God who has touched their suddenly significant life and they are not hand in hand with Jesus come what I may. Blogs are as stupid as the chatrooms which preceded them (chatrooms - which I wrote a 150,000, 475 page, thesis on).Of course Christianity and most religions are based on faulty memories of followers who wrote something that was told them by some passing strange type of person or from their own ‘this-is-the-way-it-is’ thoughts ‘because if it is my thought it must be right because I am divine’ type of thinking. Where were eye-witness-news and the investigative reporters two-thousand years ago? What a long history of deceit and grief we could have saved, but then again we are in Iraq based on lies and deceit and Colin Powell standing before the United Nations assembly with a vial of liquid – probably water – and saying Iraq had nukes. Maybe even with eye-witness news and reporters on the spot we cannot get the straight story.

There were only three players who had been chosen for both the Schoolboy National and the Australian National teams. We could not afford both and I told Leigh that but somehow we managed the money and Leigh went first to Florida with one other Australian player then met the Australian Under-18s in Toronto to begin a trip across Canada in preparation for the World Championships in Vancouver.

Southern Districts Baseball Club had held a dinner and raised two thousand dollars which paid for the Florida part. The mother only had to pay one-half of one international trip and I still needed to come up with a few thousand for the Canadian trip. I worked for the Family and Community Services with adolescents in government care. These were kids that had really been given the raw deal of life. One child I looked after had been found with his brother sleeping on cardboard boxes in Brisbane when they were four or five years old. Another adolescent, one who I looked after for a couple of years and who became quite a good baseball pitcher had been put into government care at age ten. He had gone to a neighbour asking for food for his four brothers and sisters; ages 2 – 8 and the neighbours rang the police. Apparently the ten-year-old was trying to look after his brothers and sisters on his own as the parents had both disappeared due to drugs and what not. I got to use a new government car which was good as I did not have a car. I managed to use it often for my own personal life too. I was supposed to just use it when I was with one of my charges but having the keys to where they were locked up I would just take it overnight and bring it back before folks got to work. I learned how to ‘burn rubber’ which entertained the adolescents I looked after. Sometimes we would pretend we had an off-road all-terrain vehicle and we would go bouncing around at very high speed on dirt paths in the countryside. I used it for my times to be with Kris/Chris too. What was especially kool was that the government got new cars every six months and I would just take the big Commodores saying I was too tall for the compact cars. No one ever questioned how I would put several hundred kilometres on the car each weekend or why I used so much petrol. I suppose I was lucky, as I did not have any accidents. I did hit the gate of where I collected them once and scraped the paint off the front of a car that was only a couple of days old but luckily I managed to find some paint in a department store that matched close enough and then I splashed mud over it as it was a rainy weekend and no one ever questioned it.

March to July were rare regular living months. I seemed to be getting along with Kris and Leigh was doing his schoolwork. He missed a lot of classes due to baseball practice though we were not very concerned. The ‘alleged’ mother seemed to have issues about school and we ignored her. I was spending a lot of time at the University of South Australia working at times on my PhD.

Messenger Newspaper Adelaide South Australia
I spent most of my time sitting in my office making webpages and contemplating what the hell was it that I was doing writing a PhD thesis. It seemed not long ago that I was a high school dropout, then I was wasted on drugs for years, had a couple of kids, lived on welfare, had absolutely no plans for the future and here I was sitting in front of a computer spending hours a day making webpages about my poems and not doing anything toward my PhD. I spent months doing nothing toward what I was supposed to be doing. The reality was that I had no idea what to do. I made some outlines and read some articles about computer-mediated communication. It was somewhat interesting but I was stuck. I was mainly stuck with the specifics of the date. 2000. I was not sure what that meant. If the universe is a lot of billions of years old and our solar system is billions and our sun is billions and there were humans maybe a million years ago and for hundreds of thousands of years, then thousands, then hundreds of years there was little movement in communicational techniques. Now all of a sudden, in just decades, it is going so fast. We talk about the 1800’s as a long time ago, five hundred years ago some white folks were just starting to probe North America. A thousand years ago? Two, three, five, ten, fifty thousand years ago. If we live just one life it is all so depressing – what if our one life was in the year 1213 and we lived in agony and pain and died after being raped and tortured by passing Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Zoroaster monks at age 12? Is this it? I have no choice about this being my life? I would sit there in front of the computer worried about the next thousand years.

This is a footnote in the book - He had never played baseball before but we went out and threw the ball every day for about an hour each, just like I did with Leigh. He played in under fourteens for Southern Districts and many said he had a better arm than Leigh did when he was fourteen. This child wanted to get signed too and play in the States when he got older. Unfortunately, he joined an Aboriginal gang and ran off when he was sixteen and his life went to shit and that was my other ball player….

Leigh’s Florida Schoolboy’s baseball trip (July 1 to 15th161F ) was all a disaster. Firstly, there were few games played in Florida due to rain;
Re. Florida trip costs = $3775

  • Airfares $1975
  • Accommodation & Meals $1440
  • Playing Top $60 – which I sort of took and still wear more than six years later along with the $70 jacket, $25 polo shirt, $15 cap, and some other clothing.

Then he got the flu. On the last days of the Schoolboy tournament (14th) and the first day of the Canadian trip (the 16th) even the cosmos pitched in to make things bad.

  • “July 14, 2000 -- This morning NOAA satellites and the orbiting Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) recorded one of the most powerful solar flares of the current solar cycle. Space weather forecasters had been predicting for days that an intense flare might erupt from the large sunspot group 9077…”
  • “July 14, 2000 -- The longest-lasting lunar eclipse in 140 years takes place this Sunday morning when the Moon plunges into the deepest part of Earth's shadow for nearly two hours...”

At the time I believed cosmic bodies affected us: planets, stars, galaxies, black holes, and people farting on the bus.

XIX World Junior AAA Baseball Champioship Edmontoin, Canada 2000
Leigh met the team in Toronto. He was quite sick at the time, a left-over flu from Florida. The first game of the Canadian tour was in St Mary’s, a town one hundred miles west of Toronto, where the Canadian Baseball Home of Fame is located. Leigh started the game but could only pitch two innings before being taken out for being ill though he said he tried to look well. The Australian team won and they all spent a few days playing in small towns, St. Mary’s, Guelph and Oakville before getting to the main stadium on the trip, Toronto’s Blue Jays Baseball Stadium (‘Rogers Centre’ is the official name of the place, though I am not sure why it is named, that, perhaps after the cowboy, Roy Rogers). What was exciting in my little world was that Leigh pitched. He spoke with me on the phone saying he felt really ill but he was not going to give up the chance to pitch the game. My cousin, Fred Miller wrote in our guestbook for the series a day before the series began;

July 2000 itinerary for Leigh ’s Canadian trip

Date: Sat Jul 15 02:30:43 2000
Hello Terrell,
Here is hoping that Leigh performs outstanding and that all the scouts watch every move.
Fred

Leigh was pitching in a professional baseball stadium at age 16. Their game preceded the professional game and there were tens of thousands of spectators.
As the team moved across Canada the reports back were not good. I would spend the day at my office at the University of South Australia, taking the train then bus from Christie Downs to Magill and stay until I had heard from Leigh or until the last bus and train headed out of town – about eleven PM. Leigh was doing quite poorly and he went from being the number one pitcher on the team to a fear that he would not make the final cut for the World Series in Edmonton. He was tired, his arm was sore and he was depressed. I was quite concerned. When they got to Edmonton and the team was picked Leigh was passed over. He was devastated and begged for me to come there. I had no money or I would have. I spent a lot of time with his girlfriend, Veronica, getting her to try and cheer him up. I frantically emailed other parents on the team to keep a watch on Leigh, it was the first time ever that I thought he might do something to harm himself – maybe even try suicide, he was talking very darkly.

The team gave him a lot to do and over the week of the tournament he sounded a little bit more upbeat but he was obviously depressed. He thought his whole future was gone. He had just turned seventeen and was still the best pitcher for his age group in Australia, he was just ill and everyone knew it.

I talked him into visiting his agents, The Sparta Group, in New Jersey and to visit his grandfather and his aunt, my recently found sister Sue.

Leigh’s stay with his Aunt Sue was one of his happiest times on this trip; I think. They sent me lots of e-mails with a series of a monk meditations being their favourite. With each photo of an aging balding Tibetan type of monk was a question whether the picture was of me. I am not quite sure what they saw that was so funny but Leigh was happy and that was good. His three day stay with his grandfather was not too good. My father was 95 and each night he would tell Leigh at nine PM that it was time for bed.

According to my father’s niece, Joyce, Leigh and my father did not get along well and that Leigh even had a girlfriend from a local shopping centre.

Leigh Neuage with Kenneth Adsit and my birth grandmother Gertrude Miller in Clifton Park New York
Following his visit with Sue and the grandfather Leigh stayed with his agent in New Jersey for a few days. His agent told him not to worry about a short period of performing poorly due to illness and that in actual fact he would be signed soon. By the end of July Leigh was back home and he continued with his relationship with Veronica.

Leigh was having his third birthday, July 06, in a row overseas. He turned 15 at the U-16s World Series in 1998 whilst in St. Louis; he became the youthful ideal of a 16 year old whilst playing at the highest level one his age could, in South Africa in 1999 and now he was in Florida.

When Leigh first went overseas as a Rookie in 2001, his then girlfriend, came to collect his belongings from our home in Christie Downs to her house. Whilst she was moving boxes I grabbed as much as I could – of course I was not please that she was taking his stuff. We will come back to this later.

Last week (mid- March 2007) at the school where I teach middle school (The Dwight School, NYC) several ninth grade students asked me if I believed in the ‘Chaos Theory’. These kids see me as Dr. Neuage, computer teacher, normal, clean shaven, short hair, suit and tie, closing in on sixty years of life on earth but they still think I am different than the average middle school teacher and therefore come up with these types of questions. I said something to the effect that of course I believed in the chaos theory as my whole life is proof of it. Not that I told them, or have told anyone for a long time but It was only a mere decade ago when I was a single parent living on sole parent pension in Australia trying to raise two children, two decades ago I was a struggling tofu manufacturer living on a farm with my two children, three decades ago I was in a religious order in Baltimore Maryland going by the name of Brother Arthur, four decades ago I was shooting speed and taking LSD every day in San Francisco, five decades ago I was dutifully going to church heaps in Clifton Park, New York and carrying my Bible to school and being a witness to the Lord, six decades ago I was looking around and wondering what the fuck I was doing on this planet and that is my slow progression through life. Another decade from now 2017 I doubt I will be here and by then even memories of me would have died off. Shit
