New borns
terrell with sacha birth
Figure 107 Sacha  and me three days old

Lesia had several false starts to the birthing process and we had taken the one-hour drive to Kahuku a few times with no results. The day before Sacha was born there was an earthquake that shook the building and I thought for sure this was a sign.

I have spent my whole life trying to read signs. I am a prophet in the making, a reader of signs. Unfortunately, I have yet to be able to read what the signs are. Apart from road signs (which I get confused with too) I can never figure out what is up ahead. I am a prophet in the making. Forty lifetimes from now I will be able to predict the past. The future is difficult to predict. I could say that the future will be shit and of course I would be right but then my subliminal tapes tell me that is not a positive start to the morning. I am a prophet in the making It seems there was activity out to sea in the Hawaiian chain and a million years from that moment or so a new island would emerge. Saturday, January 3rd at ten PM, we ran out to the car and headed to the North Shore. Being the male, I am my recollection of the moment was that it was time to go and I did not question why. The drive along the Windward coast was the high points of my life up to then. I suppose the high point of my life now is realizing that I am still alive (February 22, 2009). It was a new moon in Capricorn, a clear not any shit in the sky night. We had been concerned about driving this time of year due to storm waves that were washed over and sometimes closed the highway but not this time. We stopped at Kualoa Park along the coast, walked along the shore, and believed, temporarily, in magic and the air seemed to be filled with it. We got to Kahuku Hospital and Dr. Branch was summoned and told us that we had another dozen hours or so to go but we were there, and we were put in a room. At the time there were not many rooms and even now in 2004, it has only 25 rooms. We slept in our room and waited for our world to change. Sunday was a rough day, Lesia was in pain, and all day she seemed to be in labour, though I do not recall the exact number of hours but they were substantial. I would spend a few hours with Lesia then take short breaks walking outside amongst the sugar fields surround Kahuku Hospital. Several times Lesia was not pleased with having me around and snarled and hit me as I tried to do the husband assisted birthing trip trying to sponge her brow with a damp cloth. Never once considering sticking the damp cloth in her mouth where it belonged.

By late afternoon, the whole process was no longer joyful. We had planned to give birth underwater. Birthing under water was the latest fad. It had apparently started in France. We had read about it and attended some lectures in the preceding months. Dr. Branch was willing to go along with the underwater birth and we were set up in the hospital for the event. But by evening when it was getting close to the actual birth event Dr. Branch said that Sacha was not in the best position to swim out and greet the world so we went into the emergency room. We did not want bright lights but there was no way else to perform the birth, so Sacha made it into the world at 9.07 PM Sunday amongst floodlights. The mother did not take any drugs which was good as Sacha would be born with a clear and stable mind. He surely would not be one of those drug taking graffiti rapping people later that have plagued the world.

I had several watches and a few clocks set up around the room so we would have the time exactly right. The traditional metaphysical teaching is that the soul makes its final descent at the time of the baby's first breath. Some astrologers consider the birth complete after cutting the umbilical cord and others calculate the birth chart from when the head first appears. To be more complicated we have the conception chart from our shindig in Towson. I had dozens of charts pinned to the wall so that I would know ‘it all’. Of course, none of those charts helped a bit.

It took us another day to name Sacha because being a he; we could not name him Natasha. We were reading thank you cards and one couple had named their child Sacha which was somewhat close to Natasha and that was where we got the name. Because Sacha was born on a Sunday and because he had Leo rising in his astrological chart I wanted his name to spell SUN. I favoured ‘Unity’ for a middle name.

It was not until two days ago, December 20, 2004, that I realised this would have been a difficult name. Sacha, his girlfriend Georgia, Narda, and I were driving through downtown Melbourne, Australia. We were talking about names and how easy it was to tell if someone had hippie parents, giving out names like Sunshine or Hope. Sacha said he was glad that my idea for his middle name, Unity, was overruled by Lesia. Narda and Georgia thought it was quite funny, and it was then I realised it was probably good that Sacha did not have a middle name of Unity, though I must admit I still like it.

Leisa gave him the Ukrainian name, Urij, which I think, is an Orthodox saint of some sort.  We did finally get the initials of Sacha Urij Neuage - SUN. When Lesia filled out Sacha’s birth certificate she changed the first name to Alexander but I did not know that and to this day we have difficulty with what his name really is. Because he is a dual citizen situated between the ideological realms if there is really a separation of the USA and Australia he has Sacha on one passport and Alexander on another. What it shows is at what level of a lack of communication Lesia and I functioned at.

According to Hawaiian custom we planted a tree over Sacha’s placenta. There was one other baby born the same day as Sacha and he was a local Hawaiian. When Sacha and the other baby were next to each other Sacha measured twice the length and we knew that this could be one tall person someday. Though in retrospect Sacha was tall compared to a Hawaiian. He grew to about six feet one and a half inches when he was fourteen then that was it.
I do not recall what the problem between Lesia and me was during those first few days but we were not getting along at all. I continued to go to work. When I came home, I would put Sacha into a carry pouch and walk through Waikiki, walking along the beach. Prostitutes would pat him on his head and tell me to have him come back in eighteen years. I did not bring him back when he was eighteen. The prostitutes would be too middle aged for an eighteen years old to fancy anyway.

2060 Chiron is a minor planet in the outer Solar System. Discovered in 1977 by Charles T. Kowal (precovery images have been found as far back as 1895). To prove that astrologers will grab anything and assign meaning– go figure. “had an undeniable effect on astrology, providing us with the most spiritually-oriented planetary influence since Neptune, and guiding astrology to the level of a holistic healing art.” http://www.stariq.com/pagetemplate/article.asp?PageID=866
