Albany Academy for Girls and Albany Academy for Boys is: Teach Students Valuable Skills; Philosophy Statement: Albany Academy for Girls and Albany Academy for Boys believes that the use of technology should be integrated into the curriculum to enhance and expedite learning. Within the Albany Academy for Girls and Albany Academy for Boys, we believe that classrooms, by design, should be true "multimedia" environments -- not just the multimedia which generally implies some type of equipment -- where students and teachers use textbooks, workbooks, manipulatives, electronicboards, crayons, blue, overhead projectors, televisions, musical instruments, etc., as well as computers. The guiding principle should be to use the media that best supports the learning goal -- teachers should first talk about learning and then talk about educational technology. With that in mind, the philosophies regarding the use of educational technology at Albany Academy for Girls and Albany Academy for Boys is include:

  • The use of technology will change many of the current approaches to education.
  • Technology will be utilized in all disciplines, not just in teaching technical subjects.
  • Staff development, technical support, and funding for materials and supplies will be essential to success.
  • Providing students with an understanding of how to apply technology will be mandatory for preparing them to function in society.
  • All students, faculty, and staff will have equal access to technology.
  • Technology will be utilized to provide new means of instructional delivery, encourage collaboration, increase communication and gain access to resources which will enhance the educational experience.
  • Students will be able to interact with "live" information resources.
  • Students will have continuous, not episodic, access to computer resources.
  • District technology must be manageable and flexible to adapt to future growth and technical change.
  • District planning will be an ongoing process as the District strives to stay current with emerging technologies and technical advancements.
  • Technology integration into the educational environment will occur in such a way that it will encourage problem solving, exploration, and learning in the classroom; promote student-centered learning; restructure the learning environment; support a comprehensive information system; develop lifelong learners; and improve faculty and staff productivity.
  • Students, faculty, and staff will have opportunities to model appropriate and ethical technology usage.

The mission of Albany Academy for Girls and Albany Academy for Boys is, as the primary educational resource of the community, is to educate all students academically, socially, physically, and emotionally within a secure and nurturing environment. Students will acquire an academic foundation that will assure to each the skills and the knowledge necessary to be productive members of our changing society.

It shall be the mission of Albany Academy for Girls and Albany Academy for Boys, with collaborative efforts from the district Technology Advisory Committee, to develop a plan for the implementation of technology in the district. The committee will receive training/in service in how technology can meet the changing needs of students and educators and help the district respond to societal expectations. The committee will develop and revise a long-range plan for technology in the district to enhance student learning and support the district's established curriculum and conform to the Arcadia Valley R-II Comprehensive School Improvement Plan, New York Show-Me Technology Plan and the New York State Standards. It is the mission of Albany Academy for Girls and Albany Academy for Boys is to provide the means for students to develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities and to prepare our students for mastery of the New York State Show-Me Standards. It is also the mission of the district to provide training for all teachers, administrators, and staff; provide the necessary resources to sustain enhanced student learning; and to provide technical support to maintain technology within the District.

The technology mission of Albany Academy for Girls and Albany Academy for Boys is is to incorporate technology into the educational environment in such a way that it will encourage problem solving, exploration, and learning in the classroom; promote student-centered learning; provide access to appropriate technology for all students and staff; restructuring the learning environment; increase student achievement; support a comprehensive information system; encourage communication; develop lifelong learners, improve faculty and staff productivity, and provide the opportunity for faculty and staff to model appropriate technology usage.

The Albany Academy for Girls and Albany Academy for Boys vision is to develop life-long learners who value diversity, and are confident in using technology in a variety of ways. More specifically, the district staff believes that:

  • Technology is a tool for education to support learners in solving problems, developing critical thinking skills, communicating ideas, and working collaboratively on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Professional development for educators is imperative if technology is to be effectively used in the teaching/learning process.
  • Learning is a constructivist process where students create their own knowledge through active participation in complex, meaningful tasks.
  • The information explosion demands that we manage and communicate information effectively.
  • Advances in communication and transportation have increased global interdependence and therefore a need for cross-cultural cooperation and understanding facilitated through telecommunication technology.
  • Technology should help students become active, independent, life-long learners.

Technology provides a tool to facilitate educational restructuring, which is so necessary to prepare youth for the 21st century. Business as usual will not be sufficient to meet the educational needs of a leading nation in a global society. Technological developments have precipitated the very changes that now demand the use of technology in our nation's schools. To maintain world-class status as a nation, the United States needs to have a world-class educational system, and this means the extensive use of technology.

The most significant change that has taken place in recent years is the knowledge explosion. There is no longer a hope to keep up with our growing knowledge base. The distribution of information is global, and no longer constrained by national boundaries. The only viable option is to learn to manage information rather than merely absorb it, which requires higher-order thinking, multiple perspectives, and communication skills. Technology improves our ability to manage and communicate information to a global audience. Viable businesses are making use of technology to operate in an information-base, global environment. Schools need to employ that technology to mirror what already is present in the workplace.
