I have changed the letter grades by a couple of points for each letter grade for example an A was 95.5 + and is now 93.5 and I have not deducted for absence.

      WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE BY LAST CLASS – TUESDAY December 9TH

1.      Hand in five reports. They are linkable below. Report 4 there are two video clips to watch to answer the questions ‘Activist-Awards’ and ‘Best Chant ‘ and Report 5 there are sites to look up. You do not need to print out these reports, however you need to do them – (hand written is fine).

2.      Assignment 3 – which is similar to assignment one except this time critique a famous speech. There are famous speeches (unfortunately none from this class as of this printing) linkable from the assignment 3 page.

Course Syllabus

This is a preliminary syllabus. You will need to go to WebCT prior to each class for updates to this course. Grades, changes in assignments and readings, useful information and contact with your classmates via a bulletin board, chatroom and email will be accessible from WebCT. 

 

Text Book

Brydon, Steven R., & Scott, Michael D. (2003). Between one and many: The art and science of public speaking (4th Edition). Boston: McGraw-Hill.

 

The textbook comes with a CD which we will use in class (be sure the CD is in the book when you purchase it – especially if you are buying it second hand). The textbook comes with a Web support site – Online learning centre (OLC) at http://www.mhhe.com/brydon4

You will need to register with the site using the index card that is included in your textbook.

Course Description

This course is designed to acquaint you with the basic principles and fundamental techniques of effective speaking and listening in a variety of selected communication experiences. 

 

Course Objectives

      To understand and develop skills in speech composition;

      To understand and develop skills in speech delivery;

      To understand and develop skills in effective listening.

      To develop confidence and poise in the oral communication experience;

      To develop standards for the evaluation or oral communication, and

      To develop skills in responding to questions and challenges during public speaking situations.

 

Assignments

Four speeches will be presented in class. A formal outline including a bibliography will be included for the second and third speeches. As well as the speeches there will be three exams and three homework assignments and three groups of reports.

Attendance

  1. ABSENCES: attendance in class is mandatory unless there is a letter from campus central. You will lose two-points off of your final grade for each absence.
  2. LATENESS: attendance is taken at the beginning of class – please do not enter the classroom if a speech is being given until it is completed. On speech days there will be no spare time and class must start exactly at 9.05. You will need to personally check with me if you are late to be sure I have you marked for being present. I cannot accept being told a following day that you were present and not marked. You must be marked for attendance on the day or it will not count.

Please write who you are in the subject or I will delete it. For example I do not know who kooldude@hotmail.com is – and will delete it. You need to say Biemond – re. assignment 1…. Unless I reply then assume I have not received your email. Because of various email software and different word programs that sometimes do not translate properly you can use attachments but send it as a text .rtf file.

Speech Assignments

On speech day

  1. Turn in a clean copy of your speech typed and doubled spaced in 12 point font.
  2. Include any sources as a bibliography.
  3. You will give your speech from notes on 3x5 cards or using an overhead projector.
  4. Be on time – no one will be let in the class after speeches begin – meaning you will lose a point.

Assignments

1.       Assignment 1 will be due Week 6, Thursday, 09 October.  Using your evaluation sheet critique one student’s speech in depth. I want at least one hundred words written about each of the five categories: Audience analysis and goals, evidence and reasoning, organization, language and delivery.

2.       Assignment 2 will be due Week 11, Thursday, 13 November. Using your evaluation sheet critique one professional speech from the list below in depth. They are available as audio mp3 files if you cannot listen to them on your computer you can listen to them in LC3 or LC4 though you will need to bring your own headsets to listen with. I want at least one hundred words written about each of the five categories: Audience analysis and goals, evidence and reasoning, organization, language and delivery.

3.       Assignment 3 will be posted on our WebCT site Due Week 16, Thursday, 18 December.

Homework assignment two

The same procedure as homework assignment one. You will be given in each class an area to discuss and you will take notes on your group discussions – the three topics that will be discussed in groups for this cycle are: Persuasion and Arguments, Research and Evidence and Reasoning. This will be due in WEEK 12 on Monday 07 April.

 

 

Homework assignment three

Same as homework assignment one and in groups during this period we will be discussing conclusions and types of speeches and areas we have not had time to cover.

This will be due when you take your final exam during WEEK 17, Monday 15, December.
